Helen Brown

"I am a woodcut printmaker based in Sussex. I draw directly from the landscape onto wooden blocks, then carve into the blocks and print them. All of my work is handmade and each one of my pieces is given individual life through chine colle (paper overlay) and hand tinting, just as the mood of a scene shifts with light, time and experience. I spend time in the places my work depicts, returning to them. My prints are imbued with the emotion of place. Working outdoors enables me to connect with the spirit of the place, capturing the line and fluidity of scened and localities."

After graduating in Printmaking from Brighton University, Helen travelled extensively throughout Asia, in particularly India, where she created wood blocks of the landscape and worked in local studios, taking up an artist's residence in Trivandrum University, Kerela. Helen is a co-director of bip-Art Printmaking, a vibrate printmaking studio in Brighton, where she creates here own work alongside teaching those new to the medium. She works on a large Colombian press made in 1844, printing her work by hand.
